Add Hyperlinks and Link Descriptions to Polygons

Surfer can export plots to HTML Image Map files. When opened in a web browser, polygons, rectangles, and rounded rectangles with hyperlinks can be clicked to guide users to a specific file or website. When a user hovers the cursor over the polygon, the URL and link description is displayed in the browser.

To Add a Hyperlink and Link Description to objects in a base layer:

  1. Select the layer containing the objects in the plot window or Contents window.

  2. Click the Map Tools | Layer Tools | Open Attribute Table command to open the Attribute Table.

  3. Click the button to add the hyperlink attribute with the New Attribute Name dialog. In the Attribute name field, enter "Hyperlink" and press enter.

  4. If desired, click the button to add the link description with the New Attribute Name dialog. In the Attribute name field, type "LinkDescription" and press enter. The attribute is case sensitive and must match exactly to export link descriptions to HTML Image Map files.

  5. In the Hyperlink attribute column, type the hyperlink file location or web address for each desired object.

  6. Type a link description into the LinkDescription attribute column for the desired object.

To Add a Hyperlink and Link Description to an object:

  1. Select the object in the plot window or Contents window.

  2. Click the Info page of the Properties window.

  3. Click the Add button next to Add new attribute to add the hyperlink attribute. The New Attribute Name dialog opens. In the Attribute name field, enter "Hyperlink" and press enter.

  4. If desired, click the Add button next to Add new attribute to add the link description. The New Attribute Name dialog opens. In the Attribute name field, type "LinkDescription" and press enter. The attribute is case sensitive and must match exactly to export link descriptions to HTML Image Map files.

  5. In the Properties window, type the hyperlink file location or web address into the hyperlink attribute field for each desired object.

  6. In the Properties window, type a link description into the LinkDescription attribute field for the desired object.
